Football World Cup: Day 15, Group G

Belgium 1-0 England

Belgium have beaten England 1-0 to top Group G at the Football World Cup.

Adnan Januzaj's goal early in the second half meant the Red Devils will face Japan in the round of 16, while England will tackle Columbia for a spot in the quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old shimmied on the edge of the box and sent a perfect shot into the far corner of the net, past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

Both teams made wholesale changes to their line-ups, with England manager Gareth Southgate resting eight players - including captain Harry Kane - and Roberto Martinez nine from their most recent victories.

The Three Lions had several chances to equalise, but failed to convert, including a golden oportunity by Marcus Rashford in the 66th minute, when he fired wide, after finding himself one-on-one with Thibaut Courtois in the Belgian goal.

Belgium now face Japan in Rostov-on-Don on Tuesday (NZ time), while England play Colombia in Moscow on Wednesday (NZ time) in the knockout phase.

Victory in the next round would see Belgium play Brazil or Mexico, with England up against Sweden or Switzerland.

Tunisia 2-1 Panama

Tunisia bowed out on a high in their final Group G clash by defeating Panama 2-1.

The win was the first for the North Africans at the World Cup finals in 40 years.

They trailed 1-0 at the break, after a shot by Panama’s Jose Luis Rodriguez took a deflection off defender Yassine Meriah in the 33rd minute.

They hit back in the second half through Ben Yousseff and Oussama Haddadi to secure the win.

Tunisia, making their fifth appearance in the World Cup finals, had not won a game since beating Mexico in Argentina in 1978 to become the first African country to win a match at the tournament.

Panama were making their debut and will go home disappointed, having declared their dream of making history by taking at least a point.
