Portugal 1-0 Morocco

Portugal were again rescued by Cristiano Ronaldo's eye for goal, as they limped to 1-0 victory over Morocco, eliminating the African team from the World Cup.

The Real Madrid star headed his fourth goal of the tournament after four minutes.

Morocco, who had a real go at the Luzhniki Stadium, but failed to convert their chances, are pointless after also losing 1-0 to Iran and cannot progress to the second round.

Portugal struggled to impose themselves, spending large periods of the game chasing the ball, leaving coach Fernando Santos frustrated.

"We have to look at this, we lost control of the game," Santos told media afterwards.

"We misplaced a lot of passes, we lost confidence... it was inexplicable.

"In a match against players like they have, if you don't have the ball, they wear you down and you get into trouble."

Ronaldo's 85th international goal took him beyond Hungarian Ferenc Puskas' European record, with only Iran's Ali Daei ahead of him on 109.

Morocco, in their first finals appearance since France 1998, regrouped, showing real flair in attack, with Hakim Ziyech and Nordin Amrabat seeing plenty of the ball.

Amrabat was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty, after being wrestled to the ground by Raphael Guerreiro.

Portugal will try to win the group in their final game against Iran, while Morocco face Spain, both on June 26.

Luis Suarez marked his 100th international cap by sending Uruguay into the last 16 of the World Cup, as the striker benefited from some poor goalkeeping to eliminate Saudi Arabia with a 1-0 win.

Suarez tapped in midway through the first half, after the Saudi Arabian defence struggled to deal with a corner.

The goal put Uruguay second in Group A with a maximum six points, behind hosts Russia.

Saudi Arabia, who have not won a World Cup game since their debut in 1994, are pointless.

Depending on the result of their last group game against Russia, Uruguay will take on either Spain, Portugal or Iran, who are still on course in Group B for a place in the quarter-finals.

Despite the close result against the tournaments minnows, Suarez said Uruguay have accomplished what they wanted.

"All we wanted to do was to win and qualify for the next round.

"Today was another demonstration that it is so difficult to win a game in a World Cup," said the man-of-the-match.

After a 5-0 drubbing by Russia in the tournament’s opening game, the Saudi Arabians were more adventurous, but ultimately toothless before 42,678 fans at the Rostov Arena.

Suarez has now scored in three consecutive World Cups.

A slice of luck has helped Spain ease past Iran in their World Cup group B clash at Kazan.

Diego Costa's second-half goal - his third of the tournament - rebounded of an Iranian defender and then Costa again, deflecting past goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.

The 1-0 win lifts the 2010 world champions to equal-first in the group, alongside Portugal, who were equally fortunate to top Morocco by the same scoreline.

For long periods, Spain failed to break down a resolute Iranian defence, managing just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.

Iran looked to have equalised midway through the second-half, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Spain can advance with a win or draw against Morocco next week, while Iran will likely need a win against Portugal.
