Football World Cup: Day Eight wrap

France 1-0 Peru

The Peruvian World Cup dream has been shattered - they won't make the knockout stages, after a 1-0 defeat to France.

A simple finish from teenage star Kylian Mbappe pushed France to the top of Group C, safely through to the round of 16 with two wins from two games.

The South Americans were the last team to qualify for Russia, defeating New Zealand in an inter-continental home-and-away playoff for the final spot.

But two losses - they also fell 1-0 to Denmark over the weekend - have put them out of contention.

France became the third team to progress to the next phase - Russia and Uruguay are safely through from Group A - but considering their status as one of the pre-tournament favourites, they were underwhelming.

As they did against the Danes, Los Incas outplayed their rivals for much of the encounter, but just could not finish off their plentiful chances.

They dominated the second half, but could find no way past French goalie Hugo Lloris and the woodwork.

Mbappe, 19, became the youngest Frenchman to score at a World Cup tournament, when he converted off a Paul Pogba pass in the 34th minute.

France will meet Denmark next Wednesday for top spot in Group C, while Peru will try to salvage something from their campaign against Australia.

Denmark 1-1 Australia

The Socceroos can still advance from group play at the football World Cup, after a draw against Denmark.

Christian Eriksen gave the Danes an early lead, but a controversial VAR call earned the Aussies a penalty to level the scores.

Mile Jedinak converted the spot kick, but coach Bert van Marwiijk was disappointed they couldn't go on to win in the second half.

After beating Peru in their tournament opener, Denmark had a chance to clinch passage into the next round and made a great start. Eriksen scored after just seven minutes.

Before halftime, a handball in the penalty area gave Jedinak his chance from the spot and, as he did against France, he converted to lock up the scores.

Both teams had their chances during the second half, but could not find the net.

The Aussies still have a slim chance to advance, if they can win big against Peru next week, while the Danes need some kind of result against France to seal their place in the round of 16.

Croatia 3-0 Argentina

Runners-up four years ago, Argentina now teeter on the verge of early elimination, after a stunning loss to the Croatians.

With the score locked in a goal-less tie at halftime, the Europeans opened their account soon after Argentine goalie Willy Caballero totally miscued a clearing kick and Ante Rebic pounced.

With 10 minutes remaining, midfielder Luka Modric unleashed a curling effort from the edge of the penalty area, confounding Caballero to find the back of the net.

And with extra time on the clock, Ivan Rakitic completed Argentina's misery. His initial shot was blocked by Caballero, but it landed for Mateo Kovacic, who presented Rakitic a second attempt he wouldn't miss.

Argentina must now hope Iceland falter against Nigeria on Saturday morning (NZ time) and will then face the Africans in their final group game.

Croatia are the fourth team to clinch their spot in the next round, joining hosts Russia, Uruguay and France.
