Colombia – 1 2 – Japan
Japan have capitalised on Colombia's miserable start to the World Cup by claiming a 2-1 at the Morodvia Arena.
The match was just three minutes old when Colombia conceded a penalty and had a man sent off, with Carlos Sanchez dismissed for handling Shinji Kagawa's shot at a goal left exposed by terrible defending.
The red card was the second-fastest in World Cup history and the first to be awarded at this tournament.
Kagawa stepped up to slot home the spot kick and give Japan an early lead, but the side soon wasted some fine scoring opportunities and were punished when Juan Quintero converted a free kick to level the scores for Colombia.
Quintero fired low under the jumping wall to ensure his side went into the interval on level terms.
The second half was a back and forth affair until Japan regained the lead in the 73rd minute, Osako finishing with a header from a corner to secure his side their first win over a South American team at a World Cup.
Senegal - 2 1- Poland
Senegal have claimed Africa's first win of the Russia World Cup with victory over an underwhelming Poland in Moscow.
However the key talking point to emerge from the match may be M'Baye Niang's controversial goal.
Niang nabbed Senegal's second - ultimately the winner – after he'd sprinted back on to the field of play after injury and immediately intercepted a backpass from midfield.
He then slotted home into an empty net to the confusion of several Poland players.
It was Everton's Idriss Gueye who gave the Africans their first lead, his shot deflecting into the net off a Poland defender just before the interval.
Following Niang's effort , Poland ensured a frantic finale when Grzegorz Krychowiak headed home a free-kick at the far post.
The Lions of Teranga managed to hold on to move into second place in Group H.
Russia - 3 1- Egypt
Host nation Russia have continued their fairytale start at the Football World Cup with a 3-1 win over Egypt in St. Petersburg.
Talismanic striker Mo Salah's debut appearance at the tournament wasn't enough to inspire Egypt to the win they desperately needed, duelling valiantly through the first half before an own goal immediately following the interval started the rot.
Russia's Chershyev turned angled a cross inside the near-post in the 59th minute before Artem Dzyuba struck home off a couple of deft touches inside the box just minutes later to essentially seal the win.
The result moves Russia to the top of Group A and virtually guarantees they'll advance to the knock-out stage of the tournament.
For Egypt, their campaign is all but officially over.
