Germany's 1-0 loss to Mexico in their opening World Cup match was a shock to most of their fans, but a kind act from one of their stars has created a firestorm.
German substitute midfielder Julian Brandt posed for a selfie with a young German supporter at the conclusion of the 90 minutes and it hasn't gone down well in his homeland.
Looking for an explanation, German anger has been directed towards Brandt, despite coach Joachim Low describing the players as ”crestfallen” after the loss.
Respected German newspaper Bild published photos of Brandt posing with the youngster in an article that heavily criticised the 22-year-old.
Brandt provided a logical explanation.
"I wanted to go down the player’s tunnel, then came the little boy and screamed," Brandt told German media.
"In the second, you do not think about it. You do the kid a favour or not.
“I took the phone and took the selfie. I did not think anything of it."
Former World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus defended his countryman, describing the act as a 'human gesture'.
