Football World Cup: Michy Batshuayi kicks ball into his own face during celebration

  • 29/06/2018

Belgium's 1-0 win over England has been overshadowed by the celebration of one of the Red Devils players.

Adnan Januzaji scored the game's only goal early in the second half, when he cut back inside the defence and curled a left-foot finish high past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

But while his goal was brilliant, everyone is still talking about what happened next.

Michy Batshuayi ran and picked the ball out the net, and booted the ball, which ricocheted off the post and smashed into his face.

The Chelsea striker fell to the ground in pain as his team continued to celebrate the goal. The incident sent Twitter into a frenzy, with fans in fits at what they'd just seen.

After the game, Batshuayi Tweeted about it himself.

"Ahahha I knew I would be f*cked the minute I come to my mentions why am I so stupid bro shit hurts (sic)," he said.

In sport, a 'falcon’ refers to an accidental collision between head and ball, a term made popular by Aussie rugby league icon Mario Fenech, whose nickname was 'The Maltese Falcon'.

Belgium now faces Japan in Rostov-on-Don on Tuesday (NZ time), while England plays Colombia in Moscow on Wednesday (NZ time) in the knockout phase.

Victory in the next round would see Belgium play Brazil or Mexico with England up against Sweden or Switzerland.
