Football World Cup: Reaction as Germany eliminated from Russia

  • 28/06/2018

The footballing world is in shock, as Germany crashed out of the 2018 World Cup with a 2-0 defeat to South Korea on Thursday morning (NZ time).

The defending champions headed into the tournament in Russia as heavy favourites.

They needed a victory in Kazan by at least two goals to progress to the knockout stages, but they ended up being on the wrong side of one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

Now they are a statistic, as the World Cup winners' curse strikes again. The last three champions - Italy, Spain and Germany - have all been knocked out at the group stage.

"This is the biggest disgrace in German World Cup history," German newspaper Bild said.

Another German paper, Die Welt, went with the headline, "The historical disgrace of the German national team".

Many German fans watched the game in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin - many were in tears as the full-time whistle blew.

But some felt that they deserved to be eliminated due to their poor form.

"It was really bad, and they deserved to crash out," one fan said. "The preparation was really bad this time.

"I hope they will learn the lesson to prepare themselves better the next time. Like this, they deserve to be out and I say this as a German fan."

Twitter also weighed in on the result and it had plenty to say.

German basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki said one word that summed it all up: "Speechless," he tweeted.

The result also meant Mexico progressed to the round of 16 and many videos emerged on social media of them celebrating, including one of the fans hoisting a Korean man into the air, while cheering.
