Horse racing: Jockey Aaron Kuru channels the Lone Ranger with remarkable display of horsemanship

A display of horsemanship the Lone Ranger would be proud of.

That's what Waikato jockey Aaron Kuru produced during a 3200m steeplechase event at Awapuni on Saturday.

Riding second favourite Des De Jeu, all appeared loss for Kuru and his mount after a heavy crash at the first fence.

However Kuru had other ideas.

Defining the laws of gravity, Kuru slid alongside the horse before leaping back onto his saddle as Des De Jeu scrambled back to his feet.

In all the commotion, Kuru had the composure to exchange a comment with a nearby clerk of the course.

Before you knew it Des De Jeu was back among the leaders.

Jumping stylishly, Des De Jeu climbed into contention with 600m to run, and amazingly chased down heavily backed Gargarin to score a stunning victory.

Although he had shown plenty of emotion when crossing the line in front, Kuru was remarkably understated  when interviewed after the race.

"It was his first start over the fences and he probably landed a bit steep and just went down, "he said.

"I don’t really know and can't explain it as it just sort of happened.

"I got back on and he drew himself back into the race. He’s got plenty of ability.

"After that first he jumped pretty well although there’s still plenty of improvement in him, so it's exciting."
