Indycar: Scott Dixon scores milestone victory at Detroit Grand Prix

Kiwi flyer Scott Dixon has won his first race of the 2018 IndyCar season.

The 37-year-old claimed Race One of the Detroit Grand Prix, heading off American Ryan Hunter-Reay by 1.8 seconds at Belle Isle.

Dixon, who finished third at the Indy 500 on Monday (NZT), hadn't led a lap all season, until great pit strategy saw the four-time series champion jump pole sitter Michael Andretti halfway through the 70-lap race.

The victory was the Kiwi's third straight top-three finish and a fourth top-five finish in seven races, securing a 42nd career win in the process.

Alexander Rossi claimed top spot in the series standings, after coming home third, but the Kiwi has jumped to second spot, just four points behind the Italian.

Indy 500 winner Will Power has slipped to third.

The result saw Dixon draw level with Michael Andretti for third on the all-time win list in the IndyCar series.

The second race of the 'Dual in Detroit' is on Monday morning (NZT).
