As it happened: Super Rugby - Chiefs vs Crusaders

FULLTIME: CHIEFS 20 - 34 CRUSADERS

80mins: Barrett gets up to steal the lineout and the Crusaders will just close it out now. They're taking it up through their forwards and then win the penalty. Hunt taps and kicks it out to end the game.

79mins: McKenzie finds touch about 10 out from the try line and the Chiefs will have one last crack. There's still a bonus point to play for.

77mins: CRUSADERS TRY - ROMANO: Havili almost goes through but Lienert-Brown just manages to hang on. Tamanivalu finds Bridge on the wing but the Chiefs do well to keep him out. Romano has a crack and he's in for the try!

74mins: Jacobson makes another strong carry and the Chiefs look to breakout inside their own half. Wainui gets a nice ball, but Havili gets up over the ball and wins the turnover.

72mins: McKenzie's chip kick is charged into his own hands. Samu gets right on top of the ball and he wins the penalty. Mo'unga kicks long, it's not gone into touch and he's down injured. Tamanivalu does find touch however, well inside the 22m. Great nudge.

70mins: Chiefs front-row put the pressure on at the scrum and win the penalty! Been a really good battle. McKenzie finds touch this around, just inside the 22m.

68mins: Todd tries to turn the ball over at the breakdown but knocks on in the process. Chiefs will have the scrum just inside the 'Saders half.

66mins: Chiefs try the drive but Barrett comes straight through the middle to sack the maul and force the turnover. Dagg clears it up near the 10m.

64mins: Tu'inukuafe makes a strong run and forces the Crusaders to concede the penalty. Chiefs have the lineout just five metres out.

62mins: Crusaders putting it through the phases but not making a great deal of ground. Chiefs turn it over and Ngatai chips for himself, gets it back and the offside Romano is penalised.

60mins: Alaimalo has a charge but he's very upright, Ngatai tries to rip it away from him to prevent the drive but he was in front so it's an accidental offside for the scrum.

58mins: Ngatai tries the cross kick for Wainui but he's got too much on it and it sails over the sideline for a Saders lineout just outside the Chiefs 22m. Jacobson gets up to steal it and the Chiefs clear!

56mins: Mo'unga ends the game of forceback to put Dagg in half a hole. Hunt finds a bit of space down the right wing. They switch direction but Blackadder knocks on.

54mins: Crusaders look to shove the Chiefs off the ball at the scrum but Crockett's penalised and McKenzie can't find touch as Bridge kicks down field.

52mins: CHIEFS TRY - JACOBSON: Chiefs absolutely punish the 'Saders scrum and get the ball back! They're looking threatening and are only a couple of metres out. Jacobson looks to be over but they'll ask the TMO. Oh my, he's got it! Chiefs right back in it.

50mins: Ngatai times his pass to Lienert-Brown perfectly and he's in acres of space! He races up over halfway, passes to Alaimalo but his inside ball to Karpik is knocked on.

48mins: Bedwell-Curtis does well to gather in the ball from the restart and Hall puts the box kick and Macilai comes up with it! He offloads to Tamanivalu but the ball is stripped into touch.

46mins: CRUSADERS TRY - BRIDGE: Barrett gets up to win the lineout and they try the drive. Chiefs do well to stuff it so Hall breaks away. Mo'unga spots a prop in the defence, times his pass to Tamanivalu perfectly and he gives it to Bridge for the easy finish.

45mins: Nevermind, the Crusaders front-row DEMOLISHES the Chiefs pack and win the penalty. They'll have the lineout just 10 metres out.

43mins: Chiefs win the free-kick at the scrum and ask for another. Moody adjudged to have gone in early.

41mins: We're back underway and news is Retallick's night is over and has been replaced by Parete. Meanwhile, Macilai makes the first error of the second half, knocking on around halfway

HALFTIME: CHIEFS 13 - 20 CRUSADERS: That was a fascinating half of rugby. The Crusaders started the better before the Chiefs looked to have taken control, only for the defending champs to finish the half the better of the two sides.

40mins: Tamanivalu puts McKenzie on his bum and the Crusaders are on the 22m. Retallick is penalised for not rolling away and Mo'unga slots the easy three to extend the lead and take us into halftime.

38mins: Chiefs putting it through the phases but Blackadder does brilliantly to get over the ball and win it back before Lienert-Brown is penalised.

36mins: CRUSADERS TRY - TODD: Crusaders' drive is brought down and they win the penalty. We'll have another lineout. Barrett wins it, they maul once again and Todd is over for the try! Too easy.

34mins: Crusaders forwards showing some nice touches, offloading amongst themselves before Tu'inukuafe is penalised. Mo'unga finds touch just six or so metres out.

32mins: McKenzie's kick is charged and Havili wins the race to take the Crusaders inside the 22m. Bridge drops the ball however and the Chiefs clear.

30mins: Mo'unga finds Bridge with a long pass, it's well forward but refs miss it. Crusaders up over halfway but lose it in contact. Moody it was.

28mins: Chiefs try the drive but the Crusaders stuff it and force the turnover for a scrum. Been a crazy 30 minutes of footy with both sides finding success.

26mins: Dagg wants to take the lineout quick, fires an awful pass to Mo'unga, who does to rake it in before he's smashed in the tackle. Havili clears but it's off the side of the boot and it's just up over the 22m.

24mins: CHIEFS TRY - JACOBSON: Mo'unga takes it to the line hard and he beats a couple but his offload goes to nobody and the Chiefs turn it over. Ngatai hacks the loose ball ahead, Havili wins the race, but Ngatai's right over him, turns it over and Jacobson dives over for the try.

22mins: Retallick makes a meal of the restart and drops the high ball. Crusaders on attack once again near inside the 22m.

20mins: CHIEFS TRY - WAINUI: Chiefs try the set move but Wainui drops the ball for the Crusaders to get it back. Chiefs show great pressure though on defence to force the turnover and they're just five metres out. McKenzie cuts out several players to find Wainui and he's in for the try!

18mins: Lienert-Brown is up offside and he's penalised. Mo'unga will lineup an easy shot at goal and he sends it through to extend the lead.

16mins: Todd offloads from the deck to put Strange in a hole! The lock shows great strength to take the 'Saders up into the 22m. They try a long pass but Pulu does well to intercept before the Chiefs clear.

14mins: Bridge tries the grubber through from the scrum McKenzie's back there to clean up. Ngatai clears down field and Mo'unga makes a nice little run on the return.

12mins: Mo'unga goes deep with the restart and the Crusaders do well to pin the Chiefs well within their 22m. Weber's kick is a good one though as it sails over the sideline near halfway.

10mins: Crusaders pile on the pressure at the scrum but Weber breaks free with the ball. Crusaders concede the penalty for hands in the ruck and McKenize slots the penaly from right in front.

8mins: Chiefs keeping it tight, going through Tu'inukuafe but the ball pops free but Weber does enough to win the favour of the ref and they Chiefs will have the put into the scrum.

6mins: CRUSADERS TRY - BEDWELL-CURTIS: Crusaders have the penalty. Taylor takes the quick tap just five metres out, catches the Chiefs defence napping and puts Bedwell-Curtis over for the try in the corner.

5mins: Dagg's put through a hole and he gives it to Havili, he steps on and they're up near the 22m. Bridge tries the grubber but Chiefs clean it up before Weber clears it, but it's only just up over the 22m.

3mins: McKenzie spots space and puts the kick through. Mo'unga decides against clearing just five out from his own try line, almost gets in trouble but they do eventually launch it down field.

1mins: McKenzie gets us underway with the kick-off and Hall clears up field with a box kick for Alaimalo to return it.

7:30pm: Players about to make their way out. Should be a cracker of a game. The last before we break for the test matches.

7:25pm: The Crusaders without All Blacks Sam Whitelock and Ryan Crotty, while the Chiefs welcome back Sam Cane.

Pre-match banter: Sam Whitelock, Ryan Crotty to miss Crusaders match with Chiefs

All Blacks and Crusaders captain Sam Whitelock will sit out Saturday's Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs.

Whitelock is still recovering from the head knock he suffered three weeks ago against the Hurricanes, and is now in doubt for the first test against France on June 9.

Joining him on the sidelines with concussion issues of his own will be midfielder Ryan Crotty.  He'll miss his second consecutive match this weekend, and is another whose status for the All Blacks opener is highly questionable.

However, coach Scott Robertson was adamant both players had shown "massive" improvement, and are right on the cusp of a return.

"They weren't quite ready so we're giving them another week to come right," Robertson said of Whitelock and Crotty. "It's a week by week thing, so we'll see what happens next week."

"When you go through these processes it is a day to day thing and they're great. Maybe if the game was on Sunday they could have been available, so it's that close."

Quinten Strange will fill in again for Whitelock, while Jack Goodhue and Seta Tamanivalu occupy the centres.

All Blacks prop Joe Moody is back from his two-game suspension for striking against the Waratahs.

Flanker Matt Todd will fill in as captain in Whitelock's absence.

Missing from the team who beat the Hurricanes last weekend is Wallabies loose forward wannabe Pete Samu, who was also forced off after taking a blow to the head.
