Parker vs Whyte: David Higgins threatens to cancel if officials don't meet standards

Team Parker are demanding British boxing officials appoint a world class referee for Joseph Parker's upcoming fight with Dillian Whyte, threatening to walk away from the bout if that person doesn't meet their standards.

The Kiwi and the Brit square off in London on July 29, with the winner in prime position to challenge either Anthony Joshua or Deontay Wilder in a future heavyweight title fight.

"We drafted the contract carefully so we have the right to veto or object to officials that we think are unacceptable," Duco boss David Higgins told Newshub.

"We even have the right to potentially terminate the contract if we don't like the officials."

Higgins launched a verbal tirade at the British Boxing Board of Control (BBC), after referee scandals became focal points for Parker's two most recent fights against Joshua and Hughie Fury.

British referee Terry O'Conner was pulled from the Fury fight in Manchester, after concerns surrounding potential bias, while Italian Giuseppe Quartarone's handling of the unification fight with Joshua has been condemned by reputable boxing pundits.

"The BBC has not set the best practice standards and in our minds weve been let down twice in two trips to the UK.

"For the Fury fight the officials were largely a home group, which didn’t adhere to the contract. For Joshua, the choice of ref was bizarre and it showed. It was appalling. He didn't let the boxers engage and fight properly.

"If they appointed the Italian again we'd tear up the contract."

Higgins said he was putting the BBC "on notice", stressing that co-promoter Eddie Hearn had the same misgivings he did regarding the officials efforts in the Joshua fight.

"I want the media and the public to be watching and the board to be on notice that were looking for competent, unbiased performance by the judges and the referee for the first we've been to England,"stated Higgins.

"We'd expect to see one of the best referees in the world appointed and then there will be no problem."

British Boxing Board of Control general secretary Robert Smith told Sky Sports UK that it would appoint an appropriate referee for the bout.

"The British Boxing Board of Control will make the appropriate appointments in due course for a very important fight for both boxers and the officials appointed will be world class."
