Kiwi sailor Daryl Wislang has won his second consecutive Volvo Ocean Race on board Dongfeng.
The Chinese boat's beaten out Blair Tuke's Mapfre and Peter Burling's Team Brunel, sailing into the Netherlands to claim the overall title.
All three boats were tied atop the standings heading into the 11th and final leg from Gothenburg to The Hague, but a risky manoeuvre around the midway point of the leg paid off for Dongfeng.
They decided to sail a longer route down the eastern coastline, while MAPFRE and Team Brunel stayed out west.
That decision proved to be a turning point, as they crossed the line at 5:22 pm (local time), beating out their two rivals in a close finish to end the 45,000-nautical mile race.
It was heartbreak for both Tuke and Burling, competing in their first ocean race. Both fell short of claiming sailing's 'Triple Crown', as they looked to add the title to their 2016 Olympic gold and 2017 America's Cup titles.
"It's pretty disappointing," Tuke told Newshub. "We were leading and we gave ourselves many opportunities, and heading into The Hague, we went the wrong way and DongFeng went the right way to win.
"We gave it everything we had, but it wasn't meant to be, but it has been a great journey nevertheless."
Tuke and Spanish team Mapfre finished second on the table, just three points behind Dongfeng, while Burling was third on Team Brunel.
