Sailing: Kiwis Peter Burling and Blair Tuke denied historic milestone

A remarkable come-from-behind win by China's Team Dongfeng in the Volvo Ocean Race has dashed Kiwis Peter Burling and Blair Tuke's dreams of winning sailing's elusive 'Triple Crown'.

The race finished in Netherlands on Sunday night (NZ time), with Dongfeng recovering from an extraordinary deficit to cross the finish line first.

The team edged out Blair Tuke's Mapfre, which came in second overall, and Peter Burling's Team Brunel, which came third.

Dongfeng was trailing by 50 nautical miles at one stage, but a gutsy move to split from the rest of the fleet and hug the shoreline paid big dividends, giving them a straight run to the finish to deny the Kiwis.

"Plenty of emotion going on right now and it's pretty disappointing," Tuke told Newshub. "It's something that would have been nice."

The Triple Crown consists of simultaneously holding the Olympic, America's Cup and Volvo titles, and was within grasp for the two NZ sailing legends.
