Kiwi sailors Blair Tuke and Peter Burling are on the cusp of claiming something that no-one else in sailing has ever done before.

If either of their Volvo Ocean Race teams wins the final leg to the finish line in The Hague, they will become the first sailor to simultaneous hold the title of Olympic champions, America's Cup champions and Volvo Ocean Race champions too.

In sailing, this elusive hat trick is called the 'Triple Crown'.

Unlike their Olympic and America's Cup success though, they won't claim the crown together, as they are sailing on different boats for different teams.

Tuke is the helmsman/trimmer for Spain's Mapfre, while Burling is doing the same for Dutch outfit Team Brunel.

Both teams are first equal on the leaderboard going into the last quick leg from Gothenburg, Denmark, to The Hague, Netherlands.

One point behind them (and technically first equal too due to a bonus point technicality) is China's Team Dongfeng, which is in a position to cause an upset, and prevent Burling or Tuke from taking the Triple Crown.

Dongfeng was out in front for the first quarter of the 1200km final leg, but Mapfre has pulled off a sensational comeback and is now in prime position.

Burling's Team Brunel is currently in fifth position, but cannot be ruled out just yet, because it has pulled off some spectacular comebacks over the last 253 days.
