Scott McLaughlin has been topped by Australian David Reynolds for pole position of race one in the latest round of the Supercars championship in Darwin.

The championship leading Kiwi set a blistering pace in his opening qualifying lap but Reynolds more than matched it seconds later with a 1.05.8496, just shy of the lap record.

McLaughlin will start second.

It was a great bounce back from the Bathurst champion who had a weekend to forget last time out at Winton when he finished 14th overall.

The 25-year-old Kiwi, who has scored 17 pole positions since his jump to DJR-Penske in 2017, looked a little disappointed post session at the Hidden Valley Raceway.

Teammate Fabian Coulthard had a poor run and will start 14th later on Saturday.

Shane Van Gisbergen will start fifth, Andre Heimgartner seventh while Richie Stanaway qualified 22nd.

Rookie driver Anton De Pasquale, Reynolds Erebus teammate, scored the best qualifying  position of his blossoming career with a stunning lap to earn third.
