Kiwi Scott McLaughlin has extended his lead in the Supercars championship with a gutsy win in race one at Hidden Valley under intense heat in Darwin.

Starting second, McLaughlin pitted early and managed to jump pole sitter David Reynolds who was on a different strategy.

The 25-year-olds win is his sixth of the season while he has also notched 10 podium finishes in 15 races.

McLaughlin was chased home by a fast-finishing Shane Van Gisbergen who's strategy saw him pit late, allowing the Kiwi to fly through the field and put his countryman under huge pressure in the final 10-laps.

McLaughlin held on, finished less than a second in from the 2016 champion.

Fabian Coulthard had a poor race coming home 15th, just in front of Andre Heimgartner's Nissan.

Richie Stanaway struggled to a 23rd place finished.

McLaughlin's championship lead now sits at 145 points.

Van Gisbergen, second, will look to close that gap in race two tomorrow.
