Toddler injured at Auckland International Airport son of All Black

The toddler seriously injured at Auckland International Airport on Thursday was the one-year-old son of All Black Vaea Fifita.

Stff were "extremely surprised" to discover the child in the baggage handling system, after he got on a conveyor belt at the check-in counters at about 3pm.

The Aviation Security Service (Avsec) launched an investigation into the incident. 

Avsec staff moved quickly to rescue him and he was taken to hospital in serious condition with an arm injury.

"They comforted the child and administered first aid until medical staff arrived," a statement read.

Fifita's son, Paula, turns two this month and is recovering in Middlemore Hospital. 

"He had an operation on his arm and is doing okay," Fifita said in a statement. "My partner and I would like to thank airport, emergency services and hospital staff for all their support."

The Wellington loose forward has made five appearances for the national rugby side and is among the All Blacks reserves for the their test against France at Auckland's Eden Park on Saturday night. 

Tongan-born Fifita, 25, was expected to train with the team at Friday afternoon's captain's run.
