The international ice hockey match between the USA and Canada at Westpac Stadium in Wellington has been scrapped

Event organisers cited "health and safety issues related to the wind" as the reason for the cancellation.

The match was originally scheduled for 4pm on Saturday but a burst in the pipe containing the agent used freeze the ice rink burst caused a delay of three hours, only for it to be postponed until Sunday.

This time around it was the flexi panels surrounding the rink that was the issue, after one side of the fencing blew overs shortly after the surface became flooded with water.

Westpac Stadium shared their regret over the situation.

"Regrettably, due to health and safety issues related to the wind, we are unable to proceed with the Ice Hockey Classic.

"More information regarding refunds will be updated shortly. We apologise to all ticket holders."
