The All Blacks Sevens have cruised to a 29-5 win over Russia in their opening match of the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco.

The victory sets up a quarter-final clash against France on Sunday morning (NZ time).

Heavy underdogs Russia put forth an admirable effort in the opening half, restricting NZ to a slim 12-5 lead at the interval.

Joe Ravouvou took charge early in the second stanza to add another try to his first-half effort, before Andrew Knewstubb and Tim Mikkelson dotted down to put the result beyond doubt.

Earlier, the Black Ferns Sevens made light work of their competition, breezing past Mexico and Ireland and into a semi-final against the USA on Sunday.

The contest against France will kick-off at 11:16am.
