Dame Valerie Adams has finished fourth in the latest Diamond League shot put competition in Monaco on Friday (NZ time) with a season-best throw.

Adams' throw of 19.31m in the fifth round was her first time over 19 metres since giving birth to her daughter last year.

Her previous season best came last week at the Moroccan city of Rabat with a throw of 18.93m.

The competition was won by China's Lijao Gong who threw 20.31m. Raven Saunders of the United States was second, 13cm behind the German.

Adams gave birth to her first child in October last year, and returned to throw at the national track and field championships ahead of the Commonwealth Games in April.

The former world champion from New Zealand won silver at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April with 18.70m.

Meanwhile, Tom Walsh finished fifth in the men's competition, despite leading the event for a brief time.

Walsh's best attempt of 21.49m was more than half a metre behind Olympic champion, American Ryan Crouser, who broke the 22-metre mark.

The next women's shot put event will be held in Birmingham in a month's time, while the men's shot put heads to Zurich for the Diamond League final at the end of August.
