New Zealand cricketing great Sir Richard Hadlee has been struck by another cancer scare.

Sir Richard underwent a successful procedure to remove a tumour caused by bowel cancer last month.

This week, he's set to go under the knife again, after the discovery of a secondary cancer on his liver, according to a statement from NZ Cricket on Monday.

"Richard will undergo further surgery after secondary cancer was discovered in his liver," said the statement issued on behalf of Hadlee's wife, Lady Dianne Hadlee.

"Medical advice is that it's still at a very early stage and is operable.

"Once he has recovered from the operation, Richard will undergo further chemotherapy treatment.

"As with the first statement released on this matter, we disclose these details solely in the interests of transparency, and to avoid speculation and gossip.

"We would again ask that people respect our request for privacy."

Sir Richard played 86 tests for New Zealand, taking a then-world record 431 wickets with his devastating brand of swing bowling. He was also the first bowler to breach the 400-wicket mark in test matches.

Cricketing site Cricinfo named his spell of 9/52 against Australia in 1985 as the number greatest test bowling performance of all time.
