The White Ferns have suffered a record defeat to England in their opening ODI clash in Leeds.

Chasing 291 for victory, the NZ women’s cricketers were bowled out for 148 in the 36th over at Headingley.

New Zealand started well with a 70-run opening stand between Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, but then the wheels fell off, as they lost 10 wickets for just 78 runs in the space of 21.2 overs.

Devine fell for 33 in the 15th over and Bates was gone for 28 just six balls later.

The victory is England's biggest over New Zealand in terms of runs.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat, and that decision paid off, as openers Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont, put together a 111-run partnership for the first wicket.

Lea Tahuhu got the breakthrough for New Zealand in the 23rd over, but England remained in control, as skipper Heather Knight scored 63.

Amelia Kerr was the pick of the New Zealand bowlers with 2-36 from her 10 overs.

"The pitch got slower, and I knew it would turn," said New Zealand skipper Suzie Bates. "We had good plans, but we couldn't bat long enough.

"It's been tough. If Sophie and I are honest, we need to kick on. We have to bat deeper.

“They are questions we have to ask after the game."

The next encounter is in Derby on Wednesday morning (NZ time).
