Football World Cup: Controversial handball penalty mars final

  • 16/07/2018

While France and Croatia combined for six goals in Monday's (NZ time) final to send a memorable World Cup off in style, there was a sour taste for a couple of Newshub Cup Chat hosts.

A VAR review on a handball resulted in an Antoine Griezmann penalty for a handball which shouldn't have been, according to Henry Rounce.

The goal put France ahead 2-1 in the 58th minute and set them on track for a famous 4-2 victory.

"I don’t like the VAR being used in that situation. For me, it's all about the clear cut decisions," said Rounce.

Michael O'Keeffe sympathised with the Croatians but agreed that, ultimately, the correct decision was made.

"By the letter of the law I think it's a penalty but still I can't help but feel Croatia were a little bit hard done by," O'Keeffe said.

Despite the VAR controversy, Rounce believes the most deserving team lifted the Jules Rimet triphy.

"There were steady throughout and kept on progressing and then their big guns stepped up in the final."
