Football World Cup: English fan who tattooed cup on stomach has 'no regrets'

  • 12/07/2018

One England football fan was so sure his team was bringing it home, he got a tattoo to commemorate the event two weeks before the Football World Cup semi-final loss to Croatia.

Leeds supporter Jamie Richardson has taken the loss better than some of his other English fans and says he doesn't regret his decision one bit.

"I have absolutely no regrets at all. It's better to have believed and lost than not have believed at all," he told Three's The Project.

Mr Richardson says the game was a celebration of so much more than just football.

"Being in the semi-finals, we've had a brilliant couple of weeks," he said. "I've got no negatives at all.

"I'm going to look back when I'm 70 years of age with me old mates and me old mates will say, 'You remember when you got that tattoo?'"

Mr Richardson couldn't be prouder of his country's efforts.

"I was so proud of my country," he said. "This brought our community together, this was England putting ourselves back on the map, showing the world we can connect and unite.

"This went bigger than football - this is nothing about football."

The only downside to the tattoo? His wife left him after finding out about it.
