Football World Cup: Newshub reporter mobbed by ecstatic French fans

France fans are on cloud nine after watching their national team win the Football World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

'Les Bleus' defeated Croatia 4-2 in the final at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.

Newshub reporter and former New Zealand representative Michael O'Keeffe enjoyed the moment with some ecstatic French fans after the final whistle blew.

Crossing live to The AM Show, fans could be seen singing and cheering in the background, after watching captain Hugo Lloris lift the trophy.

"It is amazing," one fan said. "You can see everybody here celebrating.

“We are champions - France in 1998 was the last time - and it is crazy."

One fan got in front of the camera and gave O'Keeffe a tiny shove, but others were there to protect the Newshub reporter.

He fared far better than London-based colleague Lloyd Burr, who copped a beer in the face during a live cross after the England vs Croatia semi-final last week.

O'Keeffe said the pushing and shoving was all in good fun.

"They all just wanted their time in the sun! Ten or 15 minutes earlier myself and my cameraman were getting kisses and hugs from all the French fans.

"All the celebrations were in good spirits and those that were being a nuisance were sorted out by the French fans anyway."

Before joining the French fans, O'Keeffe watched the game with Croatian fans.

He said there were many disappointed fans, but they were also proud of their team making the final for the first time.

"There was a standing ovation from the Croatian fans," he said. "They acknowledged France were the better team and they were extremely proud in making it to the final."

France took the lead after 18 minutes, when Antoine Griezmann's free-kick deflected off Mario Mandzukic's head, but they hit right back moments later, courtesy of Ivan Perisic's left-foot finish.

The French were awarded a penalty by the Video Assistant Referee and Griezmann converted from the spot, as France led 2-1 at the break.

Two goals in six minutes wrapped the game up for France, with Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe scoring either side of the hour mark.

Croatia never gave up and pulled one back, when Mandzukic took advantage of France goalkeeper Lloris’ hesitating over a clearance to pull a goal back.

But France were deserved winners in the end, lifting the World Cup with a 4-2 win.
