Football World Cup: UK football fans react to England's defeat

  • 12/07/2018

Scottish, Irish, and Welsh football fans are celebrating after England's defeat to Croatia in the semi-final of the Football World Cup.

Croatia's Mario Mandukic scored the winning goal in extra- time to deny Gareth Southgate's side a spot in the final for the first time since 1966.

While disappointed England fans praised their team for making the final four, the other UK nations are using the time to poke fun at them after the 'It's coming home' chants.

"Mario Mandzukic there with a goal for all of Croatia. And Wales. And Scotland. And Ireland. And Northern Ireland,” one Tweet read.

Another said: "All of Scotland, Wales, and Ireland are laughing at you."

But Scotland last qualified for a World Cup in 1998, while that absence has been ever longer for Northern Ireland (1986) and Wales (1958). The Republic of Ireland was the most recent to qualify back in 2002.

Fans from all countries posted videos on social media, showing locals celebrating the defeat.

One Scotland fan made a point that their team has beaten Croatia twice in the past five years.

England didn't keep quiet on the issue though.

"Congrats to Wales and Scotland. It appears England getting eliminated is your biggest achievement in football [sic]," one fan tweeted.

"Wales and Scotland fans celebrating England coming 3rd or 4th at the World Cup. A World Cup they didn’t even qualify for. Good stuff lads."

England will face Belgium in the third place playoff on Sunday (NZ time).
