Formula One: Brendon Hartley fails to finish at Austrian Grand Prix

Kiwi Brendon Hartley has failed to finish the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix on Monday morning (NZ time).

The 28-year-old started the race from the back of the grid in 19th and fought his way up towards the top 10, but on lap 57, a gearbox failure meant the Toro Rosso driver had to retire from the race.

It was a disappointing result for Hartley, who was chasing his second F1 point on the season.

"We made a few changes to the aero balance compared to qualifying, so I felt much better with the car today," he said.

"In the first part of the race, I seemed to struggle compared to the Saubers around me, but as the tyres got older, the car came alive and was getting stronger.

"Points were always going to be tough today, but I was battling with Ericsson and he finished ninth, so it's a bit disappointing to see that.

"Initially, I thought it was a puncture, because I could feel something moving on the rear, but I'm not entirely sure what the issue is.

"We'll look into the cause tonight and hopefully come back stronger next week in Silverstone."

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen won the race and the advantage of a disastrous double no-finish for Mercedes to win the event.

Lewis Hamilton lost the lead when Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas broke down to cause a safety car and his own race ended with a late engine failure.

With Hamilton failing to finish, Ferrari driver Sebastien Vettel has retaken the championship lead by a single point, as the series moves to Silverstone for the British Grand Prix next week.
