Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel has won the British Grand Prix to deny Lewis Hamilton a fifth successive home victory and move eight points clear at the top of the Formula One standings.

Hamilton started his Mercedes badly from pole position and was hit by the other Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, as he tried to cling on to third. He fell to 16th, but recovered to second, ahead of Raikkonen who completed the podium.

It was championship leader Vettel's fourth win of the season and extends his advantage over Hamilton from one point in the standings to eight after 10 season races.

The race didn't go well for New Zealand's Brendon Hartley, who started in pit- lane after his car was severely damaged during practice.

He managed to get out onto the Silverstone track, but only lasted one lap before his Toro Rosso died and he was forced to retire.

It continues a run of poor performance – this time at the hands of the team, rather than driver.

"I'm not a believer in luck or superstition, but I think it’s fair to say that the last few weeks have been unlucky for me," Hartley said.

"It was all out of my control this weekend – the suspension failure yesterday, and another technical issue today before we could even start the race, so there’s not too much to comment on the past two days.

"It's disappointing, but I’ll hit the reset button now, take a couple of days to relax and prepare for the next race.

"I've got full trust that all of the people in Toro Rosso will be working hard over the next two weeks, as will I, to improve and show our maximum in Hockenheim.”

The next Grand Prix takes place in Germany on July 22 (NZ time).
