Kiwi golfer Ryan Fox has finished in a tie for sixth at the Scottish Open, after a mixed final round in Edinburgh.

The 31-year-old carded two-under-par 68 to finish 14-under par for the tournament, six shots behind winner Brandon Stone, who carded a 10-under 60 in his final round.

Beginning in a six-way tie for second, Fox had a mixed round, recording four birdies, but bogeyed the fifth and 15th holes.

Fox pocketed $NZ310,000 for his efforts, bringing his season purse to $NZ2.6 million.

The Kiwi shared sixth with Belgium's Thomas Pieters and American Rickie Fowler.

The trio were no match for South African Stones, who missed a shot at history as the first man to shoot 59 on the European Tour, when he could not convert a short birdie putt at the final hole at Gullane Golf Club.

The result saw him qualify for next week’s Open Championship (previously the British Open) at Carnoustie.

"It's been a long 18-month journey, making a few changes, but the swing felt incredible today, the putting felt even better, and the mental state was flawless," Stone tolds on Sky Sports UK.

"A day shooting 60 and winning is something I'm going to hold dear to my heart for a very long time.

"Hopefully, I can find some accommodation [in Carnoustie]. I wasn't exactly planning on going through."

Fox also now heads to Carnoustie for the British Open, starting Friday (NZ time).
