Golf: Kiwi Ryan Fox leads Irish Open after first round

  • 06/07/2018

New Zealander Ryan Fox is the clubhouse leader after the first round at the Irish Open at Ballyliffin.

The 31-year-old made the most of the tough conditions to get to five-under, a shot clear of home hero Padraig Harrington, English duo Ashley Chesters and Robert Rock, and French pair Matthieu Pavon and Adrien Saddier.

A solitary bogey on 15 was the only blemish on Fox's card as he rattled in six birdies to ensure he starts Saturday (NZ time) at the head of the pack.

Fox was delighted with how he played as he looks to clinch a place in The Open Championship in Scotland later this month.

"It is a nice way to start so hopefully I keep it up for the next three days," Fox said.

"I took the golf course on today, and I drove it really nicely even though the stats might now show that I gave myself changes."

Defending champion Jon Rahm is seven shots off the lead - having carded a two-over par opening round.
