Hockey: Black Sticks women fall to Argentina at World Cup

  • 31/07/2018

The Black Sticks women's hopes of World Cup glory have ended at the hands of Argentina.

On Tuesday morning (NZ time), the South Americans dispatched the New Zealanders 2-0 in their crossover knockout match in London.

The third-ranked Argentinians opened their scoring in the 25th minute with a penalty stroke, awarded after goalkeeper Grace O'Hanlon was forced to use a glove to try to deflect a shot.

After a period of sustained pressure, Delfina Merino gave Argentina a two-goal buffer in the 49th minute from a penalty corner.

Apart from some early forays on goal, the Kiwi women scarcely threatened and were thoroughly outplayed through the second half.

Argentina will advance to face Australia in the quarter-final.
