Baseball pitcher Josh Hader has apologised after years old racist and homophobic tweets surfaced while he's pitching in MLB's All Star game.

The tweets from Hader's protected account went viral while he was pitching, causing some fans at the match to turn his jersey inside out, while his family in attendance were handed new jerseys to wear that did not have Hader's name on the back.

"White power lol," read one of the tweets from 2012. Another from 2011 read "I hate gay people."

Others also featured racist, homophobic and sexist messages.

Hader, who was appearing his first All-Star game, had no idea of the controversy brewing in the stands until he checked his phone after the match.

"There's no excuse for what was said," Hader told reporters after the match.

"I'm deepy sorry for what I said and what's been going on. It doesn't reflect any of my beliefs now.

"I'm ready for any consequences that happen for what happened seven years ago."

Hader put it down to his age at the time and quoting rap lyrics.

"Being 17 years old, you know, you make stupid decisions and mistakes."

Hader currently pitches for the Milwaukee Brewers.
