Kiwi Indycar ace Scott Dixon has finished fifth at the latest round of racing at Mid-Ohio, losing 16 points on his closest pursuer for the championship crown.

Winner Alexander Rossi reaped the rewards of a risky two-stop strategy - one less pit-stop than his rivals - to finish 12 seconds clear of Robert Wickens, with Will Power third and Josef Newgarden fourth.

Victory moved American Rossi into second place in championship standings, 46 points behind Dixon with four races remaining.

The Kiwi started ninth on the grid.

"I think everbody raced pretty good today," said Dixon. "There were a couple of close calls, but it was a lot of fun.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get the result we wanted, but top five is still good.

"We were kind of in that no-man's land of going for three [pit-stops] or going for two. I wasn't concentrating enough on getting the mileage we needed.

"We had the fastest race lap by over half a second, I think, so we had the speed."

The next round is scheduled for Pocono Raceway at Long Pond, Pennsylvania on August 18/19.
