Motorsport: Scott Dixon wins in Toronto after Indycar rival crashes

  • 16/07/2018

Kiwi IndyCar driver Scott Dixon has won his third race of the Indycar season, capitalising on an error by rival Josef Newgarden in Toronto.

Dixon powered home over the 85 laps for his 44th career win ahead of Frenchman Simon Pagenaud in second and Canadian Robert Wickens.

Polesitter Newgarden, led the race early, but on Turn One of Lap 33, the 27-year-old American hit the wall, allowing Dixon to take the lead and cruise to victory from there.

Further chaos ensued at the corner, as Ryan Hunter-Reay, Graham Rahal, Will Power, Max Chilton, Ed Jones, Alexander Rossi and Sebastien Bourdais were all involved in a collision.

"I am worn out – that was definitely a physical race," Dixon said.

"With those stop-goes, it was easy to pick up debris on those tyres, and I think that is what happened to Josef. He tried to go a little bit faster going into the last corner, got into the grey and that was pretty much it.

"Now we have to keep these points rolling."

Dixon extends his lead in the drivers' standings on 464 points, 62 ahead of Newgarden with five races left this season.
