Parker vs Whyte: David Higgins makes huge bet on Kiwi fighter

  • 27/07/2018

David Higgins has been forced to put his money where his mouth is by betting on the outcome of the fight between Joseph Parker and Dillian Whyte with rival promoter Eddie Hearn.

Parker and Whyte will square off in front of a sold-out crowd at London's O2 Arena in the Aucklander's first outing since losing his WBO belt to Anthony Joshua in April.

There’s plenty on the line for both fighters and now that also applies to their promoters, who stand to lose some coin if their heavyweight doesn't prevail.

At the final press commence before the bout, heavyweight Dereck Chisora convinced both Higgins and Hearn to shake on a bet for the upcoming fight.

Chisora is fighting Carlos Takam on the undercard.

"I think Eddie and this guy [Higgins], you guys should have a bet - a hundred grand [NZ$193,000] bet on your fighters," Chisora called out.

"You shake on it right now. Come on."

Then for the first time in his career, Higgins was forced to negotiate down saying: "I don't have a hundred grand."

Eventually, the promoters agreed on £20,000 (NZ$38,660) and they reluctantly shook on it.

While this was going on, Whyte also suggested that Higgins had the cash to stump up because "you're taking 30 percent of his money". He even asked the Kiwi promoter if this was true.

"These details are confidential," replied Higgins.

Chisora has quite the history at press conferences, most notably when he threw a table at Whyte in the build-up to their 2016 bout, which Whyte won by split decision.
