Super rugby: Jordie Barrett returns to Hurricanes midfield for Chiefs quarter-final

  • 18/07/2018

Jordie Barrett shifts to centre for the Hurricanes in Friday night's Super Rugby quarter-final against the Chiefs at Westpac Stadium.

The All Blacks utility will replace Wes Goosen, who has been bracketed on the bench alongside Jonah Lowe.

Goosen fell victim to Chiefs back Johnny Fa'auli's sickening shoulder charge last weekend, which resulted in a six-week suspension for the second-five-eighth.

Goosen should be okay come game-time, but coach Chris Boyd has been hit by a unique selection headache.

"Wes' concussion protocols don't finish until about three o'clock on game day," Boyd said.

"He's had absolutely no symptoms or signs [since failing the HIA] but he's got to go through that protocol."

Captain Brad Shields is also in doubt with a rib injury, bracketed with Reed Prinsep.

Boyd said if Shields' can't recover, it's an easy swap with the impressive Prinsep having played key minutes all season.

"If he (Shields) goes out, Reed Prinsep comes straight into his spot and nobody has to move positions," Boyd said.

"We'll have a pretty good idea after training today about where Brad's at, but we certainly won't be ruling him out until Thursday or Friday."

Jordie Barrett's shift to the midfield means a move to fullback for Nehe Milner-Skudder with Julian Savea and Ben Lam starting on the wing.

Hurricanes' first-choice openside, Ardie Savea continues his spell in the medical ward as he recovers from an ankle injury.
