All Blacks squad named for 2018 Rugby Championship

Last year's standout rookie, Vaea Fifita, is the notable omission from the 2018 All Blacks Rugby Championship side.

The 26-year-old stormed onto the international scene during last year's competition, terrorising Argentina in particular with a memorable try.

But Fifita struggled for form, as the Hurricanes limped to the Super Rugby playoffs and were then eliminated at the hands of the Crusaders.

Coach Steve Hansen said he would like to see Fifita develop his game as a blindside flanker with Wellington in the Mitre 10 Cup – a position the Hurricanes refused to play him during the season.

Fifita's loss is Jackson Hemopo's gain, with the Highlanders lock/flanker earning a spot among a seven-strong loose forward contingent.

Hemopo made his debut in June against France, starring in a limited appearance off the bench in the third test.

The 24-year-old assisted an All Blacks try late in the first half, after coming on as an injury replacement, and clearly impressed the selectors with his performance.

Elsewhere, Ngani Laumape missed out on the official squad, despite scoring the Hurricanes Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year.

Laumape will join the team as injury cover for Sonny Bill Williams, who won't be available for at least the first two games, as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery.

The All Blacks coach noted that Laumape's communication with his first-five needed to improve. Hansen felt the former Warriors centre had let Beauden Barrett down at times during the Hurricanes Super Rugby campaign.

With a full provincial season behind him, Hansen believed the second-five will return to the fold for the northern tour later this year.

Hansen expected the Williams to return for the test against the Pumas in Nelson on September 8.

Crusaders openside Matt Todd has again missed selection, with the selectors favouring Ardie Savea's ability off the bench as cover for Sam Cane.

Hooker Dane Coles has been included, but is unlikely to feature until the end of the competition. Highlanders' Liam Coltman will join Nathan Harris and Codie Taylor, until Coles' return.

Hansen acknowledged the fine late-season form of Crusaders duo Bryn Hall and George Bridge, but insisted the incumbent squad members deserved their places in the squad.

Kane Hames, Nepo Laulala, Atu Moli and Jordan Taufua were not considered for selection due to injury.
