Kiwi pole vault star Eliza McCartney left the latest Diamond League meet in Birmingham on crutches after a vaulting mishap on Sunday morning (NZ time).

The Olympic bronze medallist was attempting to clear 4.2m on her second attempt when she stalled in the jump and got her feet tangled, then came tumbling down.

She then with made the call to withdraw from the competition, and was sent for scans.

The injury doesn't appear to be as bad as first thought though, with scans showing bruising on her left foot, however the 21-year-old will reassessed in a few days' time.

American Sandi Morris won the event with a best attempt of 4.62m. Katerina Stefanidi of Greece finished second, the only other competitor to clear 4.52m.
