Boxing: Deontay Wilder gatecrashes Tyson Fury's weigh-in

  • 18/08/2018

WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder was an unwelcome guest at the weigh-in for Tyson Fury's fight with Francesco Pianeta in Ireland overnight (NZ time).

Wilder had flown in from the US to be at the ringside for the bout and had a confrontation with Fury’s father, John, then later had to be separated from his rival heavyweight.

The American is expected to be announced as the Fury's next opponent should he beat Pianeta.

The 32-year-old arrived at the weigh-in and started yelling his trademark 'Bomb Squad' which didn't please John Fury.

Fury Sr. took exception to the American's continued shouting and aggressively approached Wilder before he was held back by security guards yelling "you'll never be able to defeat my son or me".

Following the weigh-in, Tyson and Wilder also had to be restrained by security as they crossed paths in the hallway outside.

Fury weighed in at 117kgs ahead of only his second fight in almost three years, while Pianeta was 114kgs.

This is the 30-year-olds second fight since returning to the sport after serving a ban following an investigation into doping and a reported failed drug test.

His boxing license was suspended in October 2016 but was reinstated this year.

Before the suspension, he held the WBA (super), IBF, WBO and IBO after beating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015.
