Cancer battling horse trainer Michael Pitman hoping 'Savvy Coup' pulls through for special cause

Saturday's Daffodil Raceday at Hastings stands to be a big one for trainer Michael Pitman.

His champion three-year old mare "Savvy Coup" will line up in the Group One Tarzino Trophy - the feature race on a day supporting the Cancer Society.

A charity that's become close to his heart.

It was back in February when Pitman got the news no one wants to hear.

"I was awake when they did the cholonoscopy and they said "look, sorry to tell ya Michael but you've got a mass cancer growth," Pitman told Newshub.

"We are a close family and i had lost my brother and to have another family member go through what he's going through is very tough.

"I was one of those blokes that never wanted to know about Cancer just let me go away and die basically.

"But life's for living."

Pitman lives for racing, training champions like Savvy Coup.

Even Bowel Cancer wasn't going to stop him watching her win the New Zealand Oaks just a month after his diagnosis.

He's been through a few more tough days since.

Pitman completed six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy a fortnight ago and will shortly have an operation to remove the cancer.

However right now he can focus on what he loves - like preparing Savvy Coup for the Tarzino.

"Even getting there will be a big thing and she's coming up really good we're really happy with her

"Daffodil day it's something that'll be very near & dear to our heart,so yeah to have her run on that day's a big big thing and to win it would be even bigger."
