New Zealand's 2015 Cricket World Cup hero Grant Elliott has officially retired from all forms of the game.

The all-rounder famously powered the Black Caps into the final, hoisting South African fast bowler Dale Steyn for a match-winning six at Eden Park.

The 39-year-old called time on his international career a year later, but continued to travel the globe as a Twenty-20 specialist.

Elliott's final game was in the English T20 competition on Saturday (NZT), captaining the Birmingham Bears to a 15-run loss against Worcestershire.

The Kiwi scored 29 with the bat and was wicketless from his four overs.

With his side officially eliminated from playoff contention, Elliott announced his farewell on social media.

"Started in Johannesburg finished in Birmingham," the South African-born player wrote.

"I remember being 12 and writing down my life goals. To play in a World Cup, play international cricket and play county cricket. 27 years on and I have loved every minute of it."

Elliott played five tests for New Zealand with limited success, but shone as a limited-overs international.

Averaging 34 runs in ODI's, Elliott also managed two centuries and 11 50s, and took 39 wickets at an average of 30 in 83 games.

Elliott also played 16 T20 international for the Blackcaps and his ‘Hairy Javelin’ nickname stems from an obscure commentary on his slim build and hirsute appearance.
