Football: Ryan Thomas' PSV handed tough Champions League draw

Ryan Thomas' PSV Eindhoven football club have drawn the 'group of death' - featuring two former champions - in the upcoming Champions League.

PSV will face Tottenham, Barcelona and Inter Milan in Group B in the group stage, after the draw in Monaco on Friday morning (NZ time).

Barcelona are five-time winners of Europe's biggest prize, while Inter are three-time champions.

Thomas joined the Dutch giants from PEC Zwolle earlier this month, but suffered a serious knee injury in his first week there.

The 23-year-old underwent successful surgery on Thursday (NZ time) and hopes to return sometime this season. It’s unknown how long the New Zealand international will be sidelined.

Elsewhere, Cristiano Ronaldo is set to return to Old Trafford, after Juventus were drawn against Manchester United in the Champions League group stage.

Joining United and Serie A champions Juventus in a difficult Group H are Valencia of Spain and Young Boys of Switzerland.

Last season's runners-up Liverpool, will face Ligue 1 winners Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli of Italy and Red Star Belgrade from Serbia in Group C.

Premier League champions Manchester City face a somewhat simpler task, as they face Shakhtar Donetsk of Russia, Lyon and Hoffenheim of Germany in Group F.

Three-time defending champions Real Madrid are in Group G with Roma, CSKA Moscow and Czech side Viktoria Plzen.
