Kiwi Lydia Ko dropped out of the top 10, as Briton Georgia Hall claimed her first golfing Major crown with victory at the Women's British Open at Royal Lytham and St Annes.

Hall is only the third British player to claim the home title since it became a Major in 2001.

Trailling a shot behind Thai Pronanong Phatlum after three rounds, Hall, 22, managed three birdies in four holes late in her final round to sweep into the lead and capitalised on a double-bogey on the penultimate hole to win by two strokes on 17 under par.

"There's someone special at home who's going through a very bad time, so this is for you, Grandad," said Hall.

"I just had to stay calm and patient. It was very close up to the last two holes and I holed all the putts today.

"I was loving it deep down, hitting the shots under pressure. To get six birdies in the final round of  a Major is not bad."

Ko was one over for the day and minus-six for the tournament in a four-way tie for 11th on six-under. She bogeyed four of the front nine holes, before steadying with a birdy and eight pars to close.
