Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko lies eighth equal after the opening round of the Indianapolis Women In Tech Championship on Friday morning (NZ time).

The 21-year-old shot a six-under-par 66, four shots behind American leader Lizette Salas at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Club.

Ko was heading for a bogey-free round at seven-under, when she found the water with her tee shot on the 16th hole.

She ended up with a double bogey on the hole to drop back, but she finished strongly with her eighth birdie of the day on the 17th.

"I gave myself lots of good looks for birdies and I was able to hole a bunch of them," Ko said afterwards.

"Other than the 16th hole, I felt like I played really solid."

Ko finished second in this event last year, four shots behind winner Lexi Thompson.
