Lydia Ko has labelled her opening round at the British Golf Open as "solid".

The former world number one recorded five birdies, as she shot a four-under 68 to trail leader Minjee Lee by three shots.

The Australian was superb, shooting a seven-under 65, including six birdies and an eagle.

Ko said she was feeling relaxed, despite the high stakes.

"I think the biggest thing for me is just to enjoy being out there," Ko said after her round.
"I had two great players to play alongside and everyone was playing really solid.

"I just tried to have fun. It's a long week, so you just have to be patient and try to enjoy every moment.

"I feel like I played pretty solid and gave myself quite a few looks at birdie, which is a good thing, especially in a Major championship, but starting off four-under in round one is a solid start," said Ko.

Meanwhile, world number 18 Michelle Wie had to withdraw midway through her round, with a hand injury.

The American was struggling at seven-over after 12 holes, before she succumbed to pain.

She said on social media a few hours later that she plans to take some time off to recuperate.

Ko will start Day Two at Royal Lytham in a tie for eighth.
