A man has bitten off another man's finger during a fight at a Massachusetts golf course, according to a WCVB-TV report.

The report from the Massachusetts television station says a 47-year-old man was arrested at the Southers Marsh Golf Club in Plymouth Saturday (NZ time), after he apparently got into a fight with another golfer and bit off a part of his thumb to his knuckle.

A bystander made a 911 call, firefighters arrived at the scene and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital.

WCVB-TV played the audio of the dispatcher from shortly after the incident.

"Be advised - an update from the PD. Apparently, there are two foursomes that got into an altercation and there's been a finger that's been bitten off.

"The victim's laying down on the main entrance road in between three golf carts."

The attacker was arrested and charged with mayhem. Police have not released his identity and it was not immediately clear what caused the altercation.

Under Massachusetts law, a charge of mayhem refers to harming another person "with malicious intent to maim or disfigure".
