Mitre 10 Cup: Auckland unbeaten after crushing Waikato

Auckland remain unbeaten in this year's Mitre 10 Cup, after a conniving 35-17 win over Waikato at Eden Park on Thursday.

It is a remarkable result for Alama Ieremia's side, which now have as many wins as they managed in the entire 2017 season.

Auckland scored five tries to Waikato's three - including two each for fullback Jordan Trainor and hooker Robbie Abel - in the demolition that saw them jump to the top of the premiership standings.

The hosts led 20-7 at the break and scored the first 15 points of the second half in a mostly one-sided affair.

Trainor scored the game's opening try, before Waikato hit the lead, when wing Mosese Dawai crossed the line.

But that was as good as it got for the Mooloos, as Abel scored both his tries just before the break.

Auckland then extended the lead to 35-7, as Trainor scored his second and winger Salesi Rayasi dotted down with 15 minutes remaining.

Waikato picked up a couple of consolation tries through Samisoni Taukei'aho and Kylem O'Donnell.

The Mooloos are back in action next Wednesday, hosting Wellington in Hamilton, while Auckland welcome Tasman on Friday week, in what’s shaping as an important premiership encounter.
