Mitre 10 Cup: Dominant first-half sees Wellington cruise past Southland

  • 01/09/2018

A dominant first half performance from Wellington set them up for a commanding 52-7 win over Southland in their Mitre 10 Cup clash on Friday night.

The Lions showed all their class as they outscored the Stags eight tries to one, including three to wing Ben Lam at Westpac Stadium.

All Blacks duo Ardie Savea and TJ Perenara both played 63 minutes for the hosts after being released by the national side as there was no Rugby Championship games this weekend.

Both players played a pivotal role for Wellington, who raced out to a 40-0 lead at halftime.

The Stags regrouped during the break and came out a lot more organised in defence as the Lions were restricted to just two second half tries to Southland's one.

Along with Lam's three tries, Thomas Umaga-Jensen, Asafo Aumua, Tolu Fahamokioa, James Blackwell, Kaliopasi Uluilakepa all scored for the Lions while Bill Fukofuka scored Southland's only try.

The win lifts Wellington up to second in the Premierships standings, while Southland remains at the bottom of the Championship standings.

Wellington will face Waikato in their next match on Wednesday, while Southland hosts Counties Manukau next Saturday.
