NRL Immortal Andrew Johns has devised a radical plan to revamp the Aussie rugby league competition - including a second team on this side of the Tasman.

Johns told Channel 9's Immortal Behaviour that the number of teams should be reduced from 16 to 12, with several clubs amalgamating their talent pool.

But that didn't apply to New Zealand, where he saw enough players to spread across the NZ Warriors and another Wellington-based franchise.

"Wellington in New Zealand, it's an area we can really grow the game," he said.

While that suggestion may warm the hearts of Kiwi fans who have lobbied for a team in the capital, hard-core Sydney leaguies won't appreciate his plans to cut back on teams from that city.

"The ideal thing would be we have a team at Western Sydney, in inner-city team, maybe one in Northern Sydney or the Central Coast, and we have a team in Southern Sydney, which would be St George and Cronulla combined.

"You see some of the games now and I don't think there's enough talent to go around."

Presumably, that would see Melbourne and Canberra retain their foothold in the competition, with an additional franchise located in Queensland.
