Rugby: Ash Dixon double leads Hawke's Bay over Southland

Hawke's Bay have kicked off their Mitre 10 Cup campaign with 31-10 victory over Southland on Sunday.

Magpies captain, Ash Dixon crossed twice as the visitors recorded a comfortable victory over the Stags in Invercargill.

Mark Braidwood opened the scoring, picking up a try on his debut for the black and white after a solid lineout drive.

Hawke's Bay would find success with the maul again shortly after, as Siosiua Kaifa went over to extend their lead.

Southland would hit back through Isaac Te Temaki, but that was as good as it got, with their remaining points coming off the boot of veteran James Wilson through a penalty goal.

Hawke's Bay were forced to play with just 13 players after Michael Allardice and Gareth Evans were shown yellow cards after Dixon's two tries on either side of halftime.

It wouldn't matter however as Hawke's Bay kept Southland scoreless for the remainder of the encounter and secured the win.

Hawke's Bay will travel north to take on Otago in Dunedin on Friday, while Southland are away to Tasman on next Sunday.
